Used to provide a quick & easy start, but this will not cut the thread down to the bottom of the hole

Used to increase the size of cut

Bottom

Used for follow through right to the bottom to obtain full depth of thread.

As opposed to straight threads such as BSW, UNC, UNF, Metric etc, taps with parallel threads are shorter in length and are used for parallel threading.
